  Identify the main social networks and their basic functions;

Establish meaningful social connections through digital platforms.
What are social networks?

Social media is an online platform that allows people to connect with others, share information, images, messages, videos, and stay up-to-date with what's happening both personally and globally. These digital tools have become a modern way to maintain an active social life from home, especially useful for those who have difficulty going out or live far from their loved ones.

Some popular networks include:

  • Facebook: ideal for sharing moments, photos, news and participating in interest groups.
  • WhatsApp: Mainly used for instant messaging, calls and video calls.
  • Instagram: aimed at sharing photos and following profiles with attractive visual content.
  • YouTube: allows you to watch educational, entertainment or cultural videos.

These platforms are available free of charge and can be used from computers, tablets, or mobile phones with an internet connection.

Benefits and risks of being connected

Main benefits:

  • Constant communication: allows you to talk to family and friends at any time of day, even if they live in another country.
  • Reunions: Many users have recovered childhood or youth friendships through these platforms.
  • Social participation: : Thematic groups and communities allow you to share interests such as gardening, reading, cooking, history, among others.
  • Access to updated information: from news to cultural events or health programs.

Common risks:

  • False identities: Some people may not be who they say they are.
  • False or misleading content: Especially during crises or major events, unfounded rumors spread easily.
  • Loss of privacy: When posting photos or personal data, these may be exposed if the settings are not adjusted correctly.
  • Dependence: Excessive use may affect other activities or cause anxiety.

Tip:It is always advisable to use social media with common sense, verifying information before sharing it, and using strong, unique passwords for each account.

Creating an account: first steps

Creating a social media account is simple if you follow a few basic steps. Although each platform has slight differences, the general structure is very similar:

  1. Visit the website or download the app (For example, www.facebook.com or the WhatsApp app from the phone's store).
  2. Click “Create Account” or “Register.”
  3. Enter a valid email address or mobile phone number.
  4. Choose a secure password that combines letters, numbers and symbols (for example:March 2025!).
  5. Enter basic personal information, such as full name and date of birth.
  6. Verify account by means of a code sent by email or SMS.

Post-profile customization:

  • Add a recent and clear profile photo.
  • Write a short personal presentation.
  • Indicate city or interests, if desired.

Tip:It's not necessary to fill out all the fields. Sharing only the essentials helps protect privacy.

Popular Platforms and How to Use Them

YouTube also offers the option to change the font size, subtitles, and video quality for greater viewing comfort.

Security and good practices in social networks

Online Privacy: Basic Settings

Maintaining privacy is essential. Each social network allows you to modify settings to control what is shown and to whom.

Recommended steps:

  • Adjust profile visibility: Friends only, Friends of Friends, or Personalized.
  • Check which posts others can see.
  • Block unknown or annoying users.
  • Check permissions from connected applications, such as games or external pages.
  • Do not publicly share personal data, such as address, telephone number, official documents or bank accounts.

Tip: It's important to review these settings periodically, as they may change after updates.

Detecting scams and fake news

Social media can also be used by malicious individuals. Being vigilant is key to avoiding fraud.

Examples of scams:

  • Messages promising inheritances or prizes if private information is shared.
  • Emails or links that pretend to be from the bank, asking for passwords.
  • Alarming publications without an official source, such as false health alerts.

How to verify:

  • Check the source of the news: Is it from a reliable source?
  • Look for spelling or writing errors.
  • Consult websites such as Maldita.es or the Internet Security Office (OSI).
  • Do not forward without first reading carefully and verifying.

Tip:If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Netiquette: behaving in the digital environment

Just as in real life, it's important to maintain respectful behavior online. Netiquette refers to the rules of digital courtesy.

Basic principles:

  • Treat others with respect, even if you don't agree with them.
  • Avoid writing all in capital letters, since it is interpreted as shouting.
  • Think before you post: How can it affect what I write?
  • Do not share other people's private information without your permission.
  • Thank and greet, as in a face-to-face conversation.

Kindness in the digital environment strengthens relationships and creates more pleasant and safe spaces.
